With the in-depth research and information I’ve delved into it’s allowed me to decide and refine an informed choice of outcome. This research task from the beginning has been unique, choosing to investigate a single area of interest, interrogate every piece of information to find out even more. Putting the effort and mass of research I have gained into a creative output was always going to be a tough part of the project due to the research causing me to go backwards and forwards on contradicting points and opinions. Due to the subjective nature of the project undertaken it was established early on that there would never be a problem to solve here, it was a matter of investigating only elements of my findings to create visuals for pleasure, not purpose.

There are two real areas of interests within my responses and those are film and print. Print is a media I can use to push my ideas and challenge the stale nature of what print has supposedly become. An investigation and element of research into print has allowed me to explore the format of the poster and the book. what it is and where the potential can take you. With film allowing you to provoke emotion and immerse an audience, it’s a true reflection of what the enigmatic script of the shipping forecast can do and something I want to challenge myself with and respond with propriety.

An immersive experience is something that deeply involves the senses and may create an altered mental state absorbing your attention and ultimately submerging you in the subject matter. This is often experienced through web and gaming where the concept of an immersive experience becomes more of a virtual reality. These experiences are often quite powerful and can be very overwhelming.
HTML5, a new and advanced version of coding the web combined with responsive design help to create these immersive online environments, becoming more widespread and heightening the user experience. Immersive experiences are closely linked with 3D and 4D experiences. |
To create an outcome to reflect the shipping forecasts and engage its audience in a different way I would have to immerse them in this world I'd have to provide them with powerful visuals, whether film or stills. I also need to think about how I could work sound to make my outcome equally powerful. I could use backing music to set a scene or think about how I can bring in the emotive language and poetic patterns of the forecast to create an atmosphere and absorb the attention of the audience.
An immersive experience as an outcome would be portrayed through web and medias you can interact, something you can almost gather a relationship from. Film can be powerful but I don't know if it's going to be as relevant. |
Time is crucial throughout the shipping forecasts. It is not only characterised to a maximum of 370 words and limited to up to 13 minutes however it is on at precise times daily, to get to these precise times there cushion it with 'Sailing By - Ronald Binge" until the minute starts. The forecasts also give you readings based on periods of time throughout the day due to the weather constantly changing and evolving! An example of this is "1002 rising slowly." "1002 rising more slowly".
|
The word slowly in this context of the shipping forecasts means a pressure change of 0.1 to 1.5hPa in up to three hours, so 'more slowly' means the pressure changes at a slower rate within the three hours. Time is an interesting element and can be used through different forms, time spent engaging with a piece of print or potentially time immersed in a film, it's an element that I can maybe play with to create more of a 'living' experience for the audience.

Visual Editions is a publishing company presenting the readers with an experience. There books are all beautifully crafted and full of quirky functionalities. They use the words 'Visual Writing' to define what there publishing house is about. It’s about writing coming to life with visuals all aiding to tell a story. These visuals are all unique and individual to each book, from something as simple as a crossed out words and cut pages to pages with more detail such as words die-cut out of pages.
The books they have produced are all brilliant examples of print as an experience, it's an engaging and immersive piece of design with tactical elements. The playful nature of a Visual Editions book allows you to pick up and continue reading wherever left off. It's not a book you have to read from cover to cover, it's something you can have fun with, demonstrated by one of there publications, Composition No.1, a box full of loose pages that you can read in any order. |

It's the idea of telling a written story and turning these books into visual pleasure that I can take forward into some of my own projects. It's all these little techniques that make these books such pleasures, there joyous and inviting and just these little ideas within the whole thing create this exciting experience for the reader.

In the modern day print can often be disregarded for modern day technologies and new advances. It is often seen that print is a dying medium but with a surge in trends currently reviving tactical and crafted goods, print can only become more valued and of greater meaning. I’m going to use print to tactically reveal the little joys of the Shipping Forecasts and present them in unexplored visual contexts. As the forecasts are full of visual joys and thought provoking phrases it’s these I will pick up on and use as a context. Printed posters can take on different and exciting forms with tactical elements as folding and unwrapping to ripping a poster to finish it, this is a hands on aspect which involves the audience and encourages them to become part of the idea.
Another way I’m going to explore print is through the book. Often regarded as an out dated medium, there is a continual argument of what the future holds for the book. Books like those of Sagmeister and Visual Editions prove there is a purpose for print, more so than your holiday book collections that are being condensed into kindles and iPads. Books, however, are a tactical form of print and the books like those of Visual Editions and Sagmeister are more than books there visual writings exploring ideas and giving the book a |

new and exciting form. Print as a whole is a tactile, hands on medium taking on forms beyond what we know as the book with folding and binding techniques advancing with paper engineering.
For me print isn’t a dying medium at all, it’s existed, just become stale which can only be seen as a positive. It’s encouraging us as designers to incorporate new and exciting elements into print media’s and while doing so pushing our ideas further than ever before, challenging us as designers and allowing ourselves to constantly extend its boundaries. |
Paper engineering plays a large part in what I could potentially create as part of an outcome. With different folding techniques it's possible to create a book which completely folds apart and as well as working as one neat piece of print it works as a bigger piece also.
Whether simple folding techniques or more intricate folds paper engineering can be used to expand and reveal further information. It could be part of a series of posters which fold out and take on new meanings. Alternatively there is the traditional book/magazine, beautifully made and crafted with visual techniques to display the content with visuals. |

Film is something that will compliment and reflect the Shipping Forecasts with propriety. There are a few elements that lead, me to film as an outcome these are: immersive experience and time. With the enigmatic nature of the forecasts sparking the imagination the film should be something that deeply involves the senses and immerses you creating an altered mental state, absorbing your attention and submerging you in the subject matter, something that is achievable with film as an immersive experience, often something you get with 3D and 4D. These experiences are often quite powerful and can be very overwhelming. By combining powerful visuals that reflect what they could have imagined and overlaying moving image as iconography I’ve set a scene and replicated the melodic repetition and emotive language. Sound has provided a chilling essence that fully absorbs

your attention making it not only immersive but an experience, involving and engaging the audience.
Another element in the film is time. Being a crucial element throughout the shipping forecasts with precise times daily with ‘Sailing By - Ronald Binge’ cushioning the broadcast to the precise second the minute starts. Time is also involved due to the readings being based on periods of time throughout the six hour periods. Time is what makes this an experience and something you can immerse yourself within, embracing the visual element whilst watching the moving iconography lead the reflected melodic repetition to depicting the forecasted reports visually. |
To visualise and reflect the emotive language of the Shipping Forecasts I could create a series of posters to reflect the ongoing
