To get what I want out of the film I'm going to study the surface of the water. This will be a part of my film which is about the experience of the forecasts, visualised and interpreted. The sea surface itself is hugely enigmatic creating shapes, light and reflection, all of beauty. Despite this beauty we have an awareness of the power and dangers of the sea.
To film I am going to Devon where I can study the water surface as well as photograph and record sound. |
This is a moving example of what I'm looking to achieve out of my time filming in North Devon. I'm going to try and capture the motion and feeling of the surface water from which will create an enigmatic background to whatever else will be in this film.
My current thoughts for this are thinking about how I can present all of this information visually, you will see sea state and you will see the information your usually told visually, maybe think about infographics and other ways I can present this information visually yet beautifully. . |

This is some of my footage from my time in Devon. Unfortunately there were many things against me on the day including wind, hail, rain and freezing cold conditions. I tried to focus the camera on the water using a 70-300mm lens and just create a study of the surface, this is good and you build up this image however the film itself isn't of quality due to the lens being knocked by the wind and taking it slightly out of focus at times.
This footage is a good starting point for me and I can extend from here, whether I was to use stills or the moving piece itself. |

The idea for my infographic concept spans off of the shape of the compass and those shapes often related to shipping and nautical imagery. Being centred around the idea of the sea state I've included all the facts you would get if listening to the forecasts themselves including: Location, Wind Direction, Wind Strength, Precipitation, Visibility and Icing.
I put together the image below as an instruction on how to understand and comprehend the information visually. |
