This is a parallel reflection of the Shipping Forecasts. The forecasts are something that spark the imagination with imagery most people cannot accurately comprehend and for others, those at sea and reliant on this radio broadcast it sparks huge emotions such as fear and relief.
The idea behind a project of this nature would be to transport the audience, not yet defined, to a visual experience of the shipping forecasts. |
The forecasts, being an emotive, spoken word, enigmatic form of weather forecast, have a firm base to expand off of. The idea of this project becoming an experience, perhaps through film and sound is something that would be very challenging however excites me as the potential here seems so great. The potential outcomes could be something along the lines of a short film, investigating the Shipping Forecasts as a visual thing, allowing people to sea what is what.

A personal response is sparked from the little pockets of joy you can find amongst the shipping forecasts. My interest here is simply to create a book which looks into every aspect of the forecasts, taking inspiration from the likes of Visual Editions and Sagmeister books, being books you can dip into and flick through as apposed to going from cover to cover. All of these books are so varied and different providing different experiences.

Thinking about the forecasts as a piece of print could lead to some interesting potential when looking at it as a sea of paper. It's an opportunity to include illustration, typography and photography in a unique manner. My initial thought is looking at binding and ways you can flick and float through books and the equivalent without having to feel the need to sit and engage, it should be a joy alike.

Another idea taking on the form of a book is a personal response to the shipping forecasts. Making a physical thing of my research, experiments and outcomes to make a tactile form of interactivity in the form of a more traditional book. With the power of writing I can also display my research alongside interviews and outcomes

as a reflection of the shipping forecasts with creative writing to give the reader a pleasant and calming read whilst using words that spark the imagination, something the forecasts do. I can use layout to take the forecasts through the forecasts.

The shipping forecasts too the vast majority of people are all imagined, an image of what they think, what they expect and how they comprehend the forecasts to be is built and created in there mind. Everyone's picture whilst listening to the forecasts is different, part of the reason this rhythmic radio report engages and emerges us. Also part of the same reason the reports relax and calm, because your mind creates this world your unfamiliar with and you fall deep into.
The idea of what we cannot see is to do with how the radio paints these pictures, partially inspired by Sean Street, Poet and Bournemouth University lecturer teaching radio and telling how radio can have life beyond words coming out of a box. |
Another part of my inspiration for this potential idea of what we can't see and what we can't comprehend is Darren Almond, a photographer well known for his series Fullmoon. Using long shutter speeds he used photography to show what no one else can see, the world and landscapes under the light of the full moon. The shutter would be open for more then 15 minutes making these photos poetic with a haunting idea of time nature and beauty.

The internet is growing rapidly and the advances that are being made quicker and quicker are phenomenal. With the internet being a 21st century technology and the radio being slightly dated the two contrast. The shipping forecasts aren't broadcast on the internet because of its ability to get confused and information becoming misleading to its original understandable mannerisms.

With the future of websites being interactive, this could be an interesting way of engaging and giving the audience an immersive experience. There are many ways I could create an experience using film and sound like mentioned above but in a more interactive way, or something which gave a lot more than a simple video or film.
